About

The name is a promise about what people can do.

Tawaanik comes from the Dari word tawānāyī — capability. We build businesses whose products let people live at the fullest of their ability.

Where the word comes from

In Dari, the Persian spoken in Afghanistan, tawānāyī (توانایی) means capability: the power or ability to do a thing. It is built from a root and a suffix.

توان

tawān

The root. Power, strength, being able. The same word a Dari speaker uses when they say they can.

‑ایی

‑āyī

The suffix that turns a quality into a noun. What was “able” becomes “ability”.

توانایی

tawānāyī → Tawaanik

Capability. Spelled for a Latin keyboard, with a hard ending so it reads as a name.

Why we chose it

Most of what is sold as health is sold as absence: no disease, no symptoms, no risk. We think the better measure is presence — what a person is actually able to do today, and for how many years they get to keep doing it.

That is the standard every Tawaanik business is held to. A product earns its place if it widens someone's capability: a clinician who makes a better decision faster, a patient who catches something early, a person who keeps their function into their eighties instead of losing it in their sixties.

What we build

Tawaanik Inc. is a holding company. It owns and operates businesses in three directions:

  • Improving health — tools for the people delivering care and the people receiving it.
  • Advancing longevity — approaches that add healthy years, judged by evidence and by function.
  • Preventative care — making the early step the practical one.

Our first business is SecondLine, a drug reference for internal medicine residents. It started as a tool the founder needed on rounds and could not find.

How we work

Small, evidence-first, and built by people who use what they make. We would rather ship one product that is genuinely relied on than several that are merely downloaded.
